Evaluations by a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP)
A SAP evaluation is the first step in the return-to-duty process following non-compliance with a DOT drug or alcohol test. Understanding the urgency of your return to work, we prioritize prompt appointment scheduling for DOT SAP evaluations. Once you’ve been entered into the Clearing House of the DOT, (includes all the agencies of the DOT) or removed from work by the USCG then the real work begins to get back your credibility, license returned and access to work starts.
If one of our Medical Review Officers deems the test to be a non-negative and then a positive you or your employee will have to talk with one of our Substance Abuse Professionals about the next steps.
A certified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) assesses employees who have breached Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol regulations. The primary objective of the SAP is to determine the necessary support for the employee to address their issues, providing recommendations for education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare. During the evaluation, the SAP reviews the employee’s case, conducts interviews, and administers assessment tools. The SAP is mandated to suggest a minimum of six random drug tests within the first year after the employee’s return to duty. The cost of SAP services ranges from $200 to $675 and may be covered by an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) or certain insurance plans. Completing the process can take several weeks, months, or years (if the employee does not adhere strictly to the program).
Freight line trucking companies are very strict when it comes to failing drug screens and will not jeopardize their business even for the smallest infraction so you’d want to make sure you stay in close contact with your counselor.
